The story behind “Smiley”

Lots of visitors to our website have inquired about the jovial raisin bread shown on our “Why WOM?” page. Although this particular image is a collage of two different photos, the raisin bread portion is not the result of Photoshop or other digital manipulation. It is a real-life loaf I baked a few years back.

One of my favorite holiday treats is a festive Italian-style raisin bread studded with sultanas, pistachios, and citron. I add a unique “Amesbury” touch by slathering the dough with a helping of Cider Hill Farm Apple Butter before rolling it up and placing it on the baking sheet.

This recipe produces an extremely large, round loaf, and I have found that the best way to serve this size and shape is to cut the loaf in half, and to cut each of the halves in half (resulting in four quarters). And this is how “Smiley” was born. I did my usual maneuvers with the knife, and when I turned one of the quarters right-side up, that sweet face looked up at me with an expression that said, “Please don’t eat me!”

We held off as long as we could, but eventually Smiley met his/her maker with a kiss of Kerrygold butter and a cup of tea. A yummy reminder that you should always try to look at things from more than one perspective. They might just look back at you!

Campaign to kill IE6 gains momentum

As reported earlier, a tsunami-like surge of opposition to Internet Explorer 6 — the outdated, buggy browser installed on all too many PCs since the year 2001 — is building. Google announced that it plans to phase out support for IE6 by the end of this year. Now, several new ninjas are stepping up to expedite the browser’s demise…and not a minute too soon.

We’re proud to join forces with the folks who are fighting the good fight — all in the name of websites that display the way they should, without shimmy-shake, overlapping text, and other bugaboos that most viewers blame on designers rather than software. Continue reading

For better photos, remember the hands-and-feet rule

At some point in your website design efforts, you will find yourself in need of photographs that represent your key constituents and players: customers, board members, volunteers, etc.

The typical approach for inexperienced photographers is to set up their shots with the subjects in a row — like a criminal lineup, or a picture out of a vintage Chamber of Commerce annual report — and to stand so far away that the background (usually an ugly function room, office, or hallway) dominates. Does your e-commerce site mark up delivery costs to overseas troops?

With everything else they have to think about, the last thing a U.S. soldier stationed overseas should have to deal with is marked-up shipping costs on purchases made from state-side e-commerce sites.

And yet, as Sam Thacker, a blogger for AllBusiness.com, points out, this is what many of our troops encounter when they attempt to do a little online shopping from their posts. In a recent article, Thacker writes: Continue reading
